Have you ever noticed any photographs in which the subject being shot had a very clear and crisp look and the background had a slight blur? Have you ever wondered how photographers are able to create such a special effect?
I'm going to give you a few steps so you can create the same shots like the very experienced photographers create.
The first thing that you should do is use a camera that has a fast lens, meaning your aperture should be at least f2.8 or larger. If you use a camera with a large aperture, the end result of your image will be a shallow depth of field. What occurs is when you take the picture, the areas around, in back and in front will have a blur. You also want a camera that has a large imaging plate.
When you're taking a picture of a person try to make sure the subjects head and shoulders are the focal point and take up the entire frame. You also want to get the person's eyes as well.
Taking great shots like this requires a great deal of practice. You may have to take the shot several times before you get the shot you're looking for. I would also suggest using a lens with a wide opening with a stop. You want to highlight some areas more than others such as the person's nose, ears or hair by using a variety of apertures.
After you've taken several shots you'll have a few different images to choose from. To create a shallow depth of field, use a telephoto lens that is long, with the maximum zoom setting.
Once you have everything set up, stand as close as possible to the subject. If you're taking pictures of a moving object, like a boat or airplane to the direction in which the object is moving. If you're using a film camera for your photography, use a ISO 400 film and a fast camera setting. When following the subject with your camera, make sure the camera is steady. This will give you the blur background all while giving the subject the crisp, clear look and feel.
When using this technique, it enhances the subjects movement and brings it to life by making the subject come alive while the background remains a blur.
Special effects software, like Photoshop can be used to create that look and feel of having the crisp subject with a blurred background. It's easier to use and a stress free way create a cool photo in the process.
Photoshop has a blur feature than can blur the background of the image to your liking. You can create the same effects as a well trained photographer. The downside of the software blur is it looks manufactured while the real blur is in fact real and looks real.
The above tips are just a few things that you can do to create a fantastic shot, using depth of field. There are other ways of doing this but I wanted to share a few of the basic things a lesser skilled photographer can do.
If you'd like to learn more about methods like these, I would suggest you go to your local library and grab a few books on the subject.
